"I thought that my experience during this fundraiser seemed very important. This was the first time that I took part in fundraising for someone other than myself. It is important to realize that we came together as a class and did something that is going to impact the [life] of someone else." -Jared Parker, Sophomore Communication Major. Davis, Illinois.
"The whole process was an interesting one. Researching what we had to raise money for, asking different organizations for donations and putting the entire thing together as a unit was pretty cool." -Taylor Kendall, Sophomore Communication Major. Calumet City, Illinois.
"Reflecting on the process, the first thing that comes to mind is the community and relationships we built, not only as a class, but as a group of people who wanted to help." Brianna Robertson, Senior, Double Major (Psychology & Communication). Savanna, Illinois.
"The process of raising money for Empower Nepali Girls was a great experience. It was a great way to do a final project for a class. I like how we learned about the group and spoke to Sara even before we thought about helping out. This gave us the ability to form an opinion about the group without feeling like we had to be all for it." - Cody Schambow, Sophomore Communication Major. Platteville, Wisconsin.
"I thought the fundraiser went pretty good! I think that having Sara Safari facetime the audience was a good way to engage them. The whole experience was really awesome, because without this class, I never would 've known about the Empower Nepali Girls Organization. All the girls, no matter their circumstance deserve a chance to learn & become educated, & I think the fundraiser will help a little bit with that." - Erin Hoffman, Sophomore Communication Major. Bettendorf, Iowa.

Two classes at the University of Dubuque (COM320: Intercultural Communication & COM357: Event Planning) are hosting a fundraiser for Empower Nepali Girls, an organization that seeks to empower young girls and women in Nepal. This event will be held in the Heritage Center at the University of Dubuque (Knapp Stage) on April, 24th 2018 from 7-9pm. The 40 students in these two classes encourage you to come and support this cause.
Raising money to empower young women and girls is a process that will not only help impact student moral character through an intercultural fundraising event, but also give them an opportunity to reinforce, reshape, and challenge their own personal, moral and spiritual beliefs. This will also help strengthen the importance of making a personal commitment to lead a life of purpose by serving/helping others. Many thanks to Prof. Sara Safari (http://www.sarasafari.com/) for inspiring our students.
Below is an excerpt from Empower Nepali Girls Mission statement:
"Our mission is to empower and support neglected, marginalized, and at-risk girls and young women in Nepal, especially those who are at greatest risk to be forced into early marriage, sold into sex slavery, or abandoned as orphans. We provide scholarships, mentoring, career guidance, and subsistence for children who would not have the opportunity to attend school and pursue future careers in medicine, engineering, business, teaching, and other professions.Originally established as the Madhav Ghimire Foundation in 2001, and later transformed into Empower Nepali Girls in 2010, our organization was created to raise funds from individuals and organizations to assist and mentor girls with the greatest potential to transform their communities and country. Girls are selected based on financial need, as well as academic potential and performance. Home and school visits are conducted several times each year by our staff in Nepal who carefully monitor progress and welfare of the children. An international team of volunteers goes annually to see the impact of our programs and meet some of the scholarship students. We now support over 280 scholarship recipients who receive all the necessities they require, including uniforms, supplies, books, shoes and fees paid." (Empower Nepali Girls: About US/ Read more:
