9 Ways to Engage Students in Class Discussion

Learning the names of your students is essential. It is a quick way to establish rapport and to let them know that you care enough to know names. It is a different matter if you have a very large class size (But not impossible).

​Use the power of the Internet to find relevant and credible case studies they can connect with to explain complex theories etc. Or to just help them understand class material.

Give them enough time to think about discussion questions. Emailing questions in advance or giving them a few minutes to think helps.

​Mix them up into small teams for class discussions. Some students are more comfortable in small teams made up of 2-5 individuals.

​Learning occurs when students know you value their opinions and they can freely express themselves.
